Did you know that April is Earth Month and April 22nd is Earth Day? We’re working on making every day Earth Day around here through making cleaner, greener choices for our cleaning products, body products, and personal care products.
Here are the steps we’ve taken to reduce chemical usage all around our home. Hopefully this will help you find what will work for you too!
We have started making DIY chemical free beauty products to spare our skin from carcinogens, preservatives, fillers, and other toxic chemicals.
We came up with several recipes for DIY chemical free bug spray. I was amazed to discover the variety of natural ingredients that can be used to repel bugs just as effectively as the typical varieties of store-bought bug sprays, loaded with harsh ingredients.
We recently made our own DIY chemical free dish soap and hand soap. I love knowing the same fingers my kids are constantly touching their eyes, nose, and mouth with and the dishes we eat off of can be just as easily cleaned without extra added chemicals!
I started cleaning with a simple solution of baking soda, lemon essential oil, and water and I’m loving how well it works and how good it smells! I use 2 tbsp baking soda and 5-10 drops lemon oil per 16 ounces of warm water. No chemicals necessary to do a great job disinfecting and degreasing!
I learned how to naturally reduce laundry energy consumption and haven’t looked back since! Laundry life changer!
We’ve also been using an easy alternative to plastic water bottles lately. I couldn’t be happier about no chemicals leaching into our water and no chemicals leaching into landfills!
Most recently, we switched to Tom’s of Maine toothpaste and deodorant. I love that their natural personal care and oral care products are made with no artificial colors, flavors, fragrances, or preservatives. We found Tom’s of Maine Silly Strawberry™ Fluoride Toothpaste, Antiplaque & Whitening Peppermint Fluoride Free Toothpaste, Whole Care® Peppermint and Spearmint Fluoride Toothpaste, and Unisex Long Lasting Apricot Deodorant at Walmart. This is how my family makes natural choices to help create a green home and a cleaner planet. How does your family like to celebrate Earth Day?
Tom’s is my favorite kid’s toothpaste! Thanks for sharing your cleaning recipe. I’m so tired of the tea tree/vinegar smell, glad to have a new option to try out!
Awesome! Glad to hear it Amanda!
Great suggestions! Thank you for sharing!
I’ve been making my own cleaner using vinegar and water but now that we are starting to get warmer weather here in upstate NY I’m already finding a lot of bugs, in and out of the home. I will be trying the natural bug repellent ASAP!
You’re welcome! Thanks for that feedback, I’m glad to hear it!
Great ideas for going green as a family. It’s so important to protect our children’s health in every way possible, and Tom’s of Maine is definitely a great way to start! #client
Thanks Carrie!
+1 for vinegar for its benefits! Thanks for the tips Sybil! 🙂
